Melanie is a Membership Manager and member of the Core Group at the Global Network for Human Rights and the Environment. She is also the Managing Lawyer, Australian Capital Territory (ACT) at the Environmental Defenders Office (EDO) and a member of the Subcommittee on Environment and Human Rights at Australian Lawyers for Human Rights.
Melanie specialises in the intersection of human rights and environmental law, having worked as both a refugee and environmental lawyer in Australia and the Asia-Pacific region. At EDO, Melanie currently practices in public interest environmental law, focusing on environmental human rights. She has also worked in government, private practice, and at the United Nations and is an expert in administrative, environmental, refugee, human rights, and international law.
Melanie is the lead author of a forthcoming report on the human right to a healthy environment in Australia, to be published by EDO, and has advised the ACT government on legislating the right in the ACT Human Rights Act 2004. She regularly guest lectures and presents on human rights and the environment at universities and events. She holds degrees in law, politics, and international law.
