Climate Dynamics and the Politics of a Post-Carbon Africa<\/strong> (abstracts)
The ongoing calls for urgent action to mitigate the growing scourge of climate change by transitioning away from fossil fuels are often met with troubling uncertainties about the fate of costly commercial ventures in the petroleum industry, risks to sustainable livelihood bundles, precarious patterns of human mobilities and displacement, and potential violent flashpoints over distributional contentions in multi-sited domains of (post)carbon development. The Centre of African Studies (CAS) at the University of Edinburgh invites submissions from scholars and active researchers interested in the socio-technical and political entanglements shaping sustainable energy transitions in Africa. We are particularly interested in submissions that draw from an empirically- grounded and theoretical introspections about an African perspective on the global energy

ESIL Research Forum – International Law in the Age of Permacrisis<\/strong> (abstracts<\/em>)
The ESlL Research Forum is a scholarly conference that promotes engagement with research in progress by members of the Society in the early stages of their careers. It has a small and intensive format: no more than 25-30 paper submissions will be selected. The 2025 Research Forum aims to reflect on the status of international law and its potential transformation in the age of permacrisis. Two underlying themes will shape the discussions: how international actors, norms and processes are deploying old and new tools and methods to face emerging challenges, and broader reflections on how permacrisis narratives gain traction and reframe international discourse. Waging Justice for Women Fellowship Program<\/strong> (A Variety of African States<\/em>)
The Fellowship offers an annual salary and an opportunity to work with leading human rights organizations on gender justice. Fellows support at least one strategic litigation case designed to advance women and girls\u2019 rights in national, regional or international courts or UN mechanisms. Fellows should expect to be based in the home country of their host organization and have the right to work in that country. The ten host organizations partnering with the Fellowship Program in 2025 are AvocAid in Sierra Leone, the Association of Female Lawyers in Liberia, the Centre for Human Rights Education Advice and Assistance in Malawi, the Centre for Human Rights, University of Pretoria in South Africa, the Female Lawyers Association Gambia, the Initiative for Strategic Litigation in Africa in South Africa, the Institute for Human Rights and Development in Africa in The Gambia, the Katiba Institute in Kenya, the Pan-African Lawyers Union in Tanzania, and the Women Lawyers Association in Malawi. Center for International Environmental Law – US Carbon Capture Senior Campaigner<\/strong> (USA<\/em>)
As CIEL\u2019s US-based CCS Senior Campaigner, you will lead, develop, and operationalize the organization\u2019s priorities to accelerate the transition away from fossil fuels by confronting the deployment of false solutions, ensuring that people are at the center of climate policies while holding corporations accountable for their human rights and environmental harms. You will serve as a focal point for CIEL\u2019s work to confront the accelerating CCS buildout in the US, with a special focus on Texas, Louisiana, and the Gulf of Mexico. The World Benchmarking Alliance (WBA) is a global organisation building a movement to measure, incentivise and encourage business\u2019 impact towards a sustainable future for everyone. Global Environmental Law Centre’s (GELC)\u00a0Webinar: Litigating Climate Change in the Global South with Jolene Lin and Jacqueline Peel<\/strong> (online<\/em>)
A\u00a0farmer suing\u00a0his government for violating his constitutional rights through failing to implement the country\u2019s declared climate policy frameworks. A coalition of environmental non-governmental organizations (NGOs) working with local communities to oppose the authorization of a large, new coal-fired power plant. Political parties\u00a0bringing\u00a0suit to the highest court of the land to take issue with the non-operationalization of the government\u2019s financial mechanism for funding climate mitigation and adaptation actions. Young\u00a0people opposing\u00a0large-scale deforestation which threatens their\u00a0climate future and\u00a0that of future\u00a0generations. These are just some examples of a new phenomenon of climate cases emerging in developing countries of the so-called \u2018Global South\u2019. This body of Global South cases now numbers more than 120 cases filed, decided or pending. And it is a fast-growing field: About half of the Global South climate cases have been filed in the past five years. Drawing from their book, \u201cLitigating Climate Change in the Global South\u201d, the speakers will discuss the emerging and accelerating phenomenon of climate litigation in the Global South.
