Asian and African Perspectives on Law and Sea-level Rise <\/strong>(abstracts<\/em>)
Are you interested in presenting at the conference “Asian and African Perspectives on Law and Sea-Level Rise”? Co-organised by WTI’s research fellow,\u00a0Dr. Aylin Yildiz Noorda, the conference will take place on\u00a0October 3, 2024,<\/strong>\u00a0at the University of Lisbon. The organisers invite\u00a0researchers at any career stage to present their work on the\u00a0<\/strong>intersection of law and sea-level rise\u00a0(SLR) with a focus on Asian and\/or African countries, in a hybrid conference organised by the Lisbon Public Law Research Centre. Navigating a Role for Agri-Food Systems in Tackling Climate Change<\/strong> (expressions of interest<\/em>)
Laure Gosselin (Universit\u00e9 Laval & Technische Universit\u00e4t Dresden) and Anja Bless (University of Technology Sydney) are convening a panel on ‘Navigating a Role for Agri-Food Systems in Tackling Climate Change’ for next year’s International Studies Association Conference in Chicago. Paper topics could include everything from food system narratives to diets, ‘climate-smart’ agriculture, carbon farming, or corporate power. The Advocacy Committee is planning to draft a GNHRE response. Environment, Society and Policy Group\/University of Ottawa<\/strong> (Research Associate<\/em>)
Arctic Pulse is a Canadian-led international science initiative addressing globally relevant questions with local and globally relevant consequences. Between 2024 and 2027, international science initiatives and events will be coordinated to lead up to a major Arctic science field mission that will occur in Arctic Canada in the summer of 2027. This initiative is being co-designed in ways that advance and support Indigenous self-determination in research. Thus, the person filling this position will work directly with Inuit Circumpolar Council Canada (ICC) and researchers at University of Ottawa and Laval University, in order coordinate and organize co-development workshops, develop appropriate governance frameworks, set up committees, liaise with key rightsholder groups, and relevant stakeholders, and support training and communications. The person will also establish linkages between Arctic Pulse and the CFREF funded Qanittaq project which is co-led by ICC Canada and Memorial University and is supported by University of Ottawa. UNSW, Sydney<\/strong>\u00a0(Lecturer\/Senior Lecturer – Climate Litigation<\/em>)
This is a newly created, full-time ‘Lecturer\/Senior Lecturer – Climate Litigation’ position at the Law & Justice Faculty at UNSW in Sydney, Australia. Working in Law & Justice and with the university’s\u00a0Institute for Climate Risk and Response<\/a>\u00a0(ICRR), the person will be required to undertake a program of research that will have significant impact in the scholarship related to the field of climate litigation in Australia and globally and will create a nationally recognised research track record. The person will apply and, where necessary, adapt existing research methods, and develop new methods, to the study of climate litigation. Application deadline:\u00a0May 30, 2024<\/strong>. Net Zero and Natural Resources Law: Sovereignty, Security & Solidarity – Book Launch<\/strong> (in person<\/em>)
This book offers a comprehensive and authoritative account of the nature, scope, and guiding principles of natural resources law and policy in a #netzero era. In response to the climate emergency, several countries, corporations, and other actors worldwide have announced programmes to bring down global emissions of greenhouse gases that contribute to climate change to net zero by 2060 or earlier. With presentations from the expert contributors to the book, this session reflects on innovative legal drafting, contract negotiation and policymaking approaches needed to address the wide range of resource sovereignty, security, and solidarity questions posed by the net zero transition. 2024 Geneva Dialogues on Human Rights and Climate Change<\/strong> (in person<\/em>)
Topics of discussion this year will include States\u2019 obligations to tackle climate impacts; mechanisms and approaches to address ongoing loss and damage; meaningful protection of environmental defenders in the context of climate conferences; and ongoing advisory opinion processes before international and regional courts. Panelists and participants will also explore how Geneva-based human rights mechanisms can inform the ongoing advisory opinions before international courts and tribunals, and how these mechanisms can build on the outcomes of such processes. The Role and Impact of Law in Sustainability Transformation<\/strong> (in person and online<\/em>)
RELIEF, a research project funded by the Strategic Research Council of Finland, examines the role and impact of law in sustainability transformation through the lens of resilience. We’ll explore how legal systems interact with ambitious sustainability targets, including climate change mitigation, biodiversity conservation, and water management.
