Graz Annual PhD Workshop on Climate Law and Climate Litigation<\/strong> (abstracts<\/em>)
The 3rd ClimLaw: Graz Annual PhD Workshop on Climate Law and Litigation will be hosted in Person at the University of Graz, Austria, for all presenters and will be streamed online via Zoom from May 23 \u2013 May 24, 2024, every day from 09:00 \u2013 17:00 CET. This workshop’s objective is to provide a platform for PhD researchers from across the globe to engage with senior and expert academics in the fields of climate law and climate litigation, thus promoting knowledge exchange and capacity building. 450-550 word abstracts should be sent by April 15, 2024<\/strong>. We are looking for an enthusiastic PhD researcher to conduct independent research at the Institute of Political Science at Leiden University. Specifically, we invite applicants to develop an innovative PhD proposal on empirical and normative issues around the \u2018Climate Migration\u2019 Dilemma. The PhD project will be supervised by Dr Katharina Natter, Dr Rebecca Ploof and Professor Jan Aart Scholte. This position is located in the UNEP Law Division in Nairobi, Kenya. The position will lead the Frontiers in Environmental Law Unit (FELU) within the Environmental Rule of Law Branch in the Law Division. Investment Arbitration and Climate Change<\/strong> (online<\/em>)
The relationship between international investment law and climate change is garnering growing interest. Measures designed to mitigate or adapt to climate change have been considered in some investment arbitration claims, and a growing number of cases involve investments in the renewable energy sector. With these cases presenting novel issues, there is a pressing need for clarity and guidance for legal practitioners and arbitrators. In this webinar, contributors to the recently published volume\u00a0Investment Arbitration and Climate Change\u00a0<\/em><\/a>will discuss issues at the intersection between a State\u2019s climate change initiatives and their potential impact on foreign investors. THE PROSECUTION OF ECOCIDE AND OTHER ENVIRONMENTAL CRIMES: STATE OF THE LAW AND WAY(S) FORWARD<\/strong> (in person, Geneva<\/em>)
This IHL Talk will explore various issues related to the prosecution of ecocide and other environmental crimes. In particular, it will discuss whether such crimes could be prosecuted within the existing framework of international criminal law and whether a new category of international crimes that departs from the prevailing anthropocentric approach would bring added value. It will further examine how domestic regulations and prosecutions, but also civil society initiatives such as people\u2019s tribunals, could be considered as more efficient alternatives.
