Bruti Liberati, Margherita

Margherita is a trainee lawyer committed to using the law as a means to empower and protect individuals outmatched by the system and to explore the interlinkages between sustainable development and human rights protection. She first applied such interest in community-based volunteering projects in Brasil, Argentina and Italy, and then channelled it towards the field of Refugee Protection.

Margherita graduated with honours at the University of Milan, majoring in International and European Law and excelling in subjects such as International Refugee Protection and Sustainable Development, European Law, International Public Law, International Humanitarian Law, Political Economy and Administrative Law. Having been awarded two scholarships to study at the University of Buenos Aires and at the University of Sevilla, she also took cross-sectoral comparative studies and deepened the Argentinian and Spanish legal systems. She worked as a Protection Intern at UNHCR’s field office in Peten, Guatemala and graduated in International Refugee Law. Her final dissertation on the ‘Exclusion Clauses from Refugee Protection under International and EU Law’ was partly based on the internship she did meanwhile undertook at the International Protection Unit of the Tribunal of Milan, assisting a senior judge through the whole RSD proceeding.

Working in the field of refugee protection convinced her of the need for cross-sectorial development strategies to effectively address the socio-economic challenges of developing countries and avoid emergencies. As the issue of climatic change and environmental degradation unfolds, Margherita feels compelled to contribute to adapting the international legal framework to the needed green transition, with the ultimate goal of eradicating poverty and fostering an environmental and socially sustainable development.

In particular, she is interested in understanding the interlinkages between climate and development goals and to address the challenges thereof. As part of her current lawyer training at Nctm Brussels, she is deepening other aspects of International Development, namely those related to trade defence, IP protection, carbon management and the linkages between market regulation and EU’s Climate Policy.
