CEISAL Congress on Climate, Environmental, and Social Justice (abstracts)
Symposium Title: Transforming Climate Governance, Justice, and Litigation in Latin America and the Caribbean. This symposium delves into the complex ways in which the climate crisis shapes governance frameworks, justice paradigms, and litigation strategies in Latin America and the Caribbean. An interdisciplinary group of scholars and practitioners working at the nexus of law, the environment, and society are kindly invited to present insights on the interconnections between climate action, territorial management, and regulatory approaches. International Law’s Local Encounters: Experiences and Imaginaries of (de-)Coloniality (abstracts)
what do we make of calls and struggles for ‘decolonisation’ and ‘decolonial futures’ articulated through international law, but also posed as a demand towards it? How are claims to decoloniality and decolonisation coming to expression in international legal practice via and through local experiences and global solidarities – and how is it shaping international law? And how can we understand current and historical claims to decolonial futures through international law by taking seriously the specific places that they arise from? This two-day workshop will take place at the University of Amsterdam on June 5-6, 2025. Call for input of the Special Rapporteur on the independence of judges and lawyers for the next thematic report on Indigenous justice
Deadline: December 13, 2024. More information here.
Purpose: The United Nations Special Rapporteur on the independence of judges and lawyers, Margaret Satterthwaite, invites Member States, national human rights institutions, and other relevant State institutions, international and regional organizations, civil society, scholars, activists, and other interested individuals and organizations to provide written inputs for her next thematic report on Indigenous justice. The report will be presented at the 59th session of the Human Rights Council in June 2025.

CESCR calls for written contributions to the draft general comment on Economic, Social and Cultural Rights and the Environmental Dimension of Sustainable Development
Deadline: December 30, 2024. More information here.
Purpose: To inform the development of a general comment on Economic, Social and Cultural Rights and the Environmental Dimension of Sustainable Development.

Opportunities:

University of Eastern Finland, Postdoctoral Researcher in Climate and Environmental Law and Policy (Joensuu, Finland)
The Researcher will work as part of the ClimAirPathways project, which is funded by the Research Council of Finland (2023-27). The project brings together legal scholars at CCEEL and climate modellers from the Finnish Meteorological Institute to develop pathways to reduce black carbon emissions in the EU and China through a stronger integration of climate and air quality policies. Commonly known as soot, black carbon is a particulate pollutant with negative effects on both human health and the climate. Application deadline: November 30, 2024. See more here.

Food and Agriculture Organization of the UN, Senior Technical Officer (Climate, Biodiversity, Environment) (Rome, Italy)
The Office of Climate Change, Biodiversity and Environment (OCB) works to ensure that countries and stakeholders respond to the challenges of climate change, biodiversity loss and environmental degradation. OCB provides a cross organizational coordination role on issues related to climate change, biodiversity and the environment and is the focal point for major multilateral environmental agreements including the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC) and the Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD). The post is located in the Programme Support Hub of OCB at FAO headquarters in Rome, Italy. The Programme Support Hub is responsible for undertaking and supporting crosscutting scientific and technical analysis on climate, biodiversity and environment in support of OCB’s actions and support to countries. Chinese University of Hong Kong, Research Assistant or Post-Doc Fellow in the Real-World Impact of Climate Litigation (Hong Kong)
Applications are invited for up to three positions of Research Assistant(s) or Post-Doctoral Fellow(s) for a research project aimed at assessing the real-world effects of courtroom victories in climate litigation. The project is funded by the Hong Kong Research Grants Council and implemented by Professor Zhang Hao at the Chinese University of Hong Kong and Professor Benoit Mayer at the University of Reading. We are particularly looking for candidates who can show intellectual curiosity, perseverance, and are able to work reliably with minimal supervision.
