Challenges and the Future of Minority and Indigenous Rights Protection (abstracts)
This two and a half-day in person conference will take a moment to assess the contributions and challenges these instruments and other types of solutions have brought vis a vis minority and indigenous communities, which these instruments are seeking to provide redress and protection for. This conference will reflect on the rights of indigenous peoples and ethnic, religious and linguistic minorities, and the need to fundamentally rethink and recommit to their protection. It aims to foster inclusive dialogue among and with academics, practitioners, and members of these communities to enhance existing conversations in these areas and to specifically look into emerging areas which are of importance in these communities. Location: University of Stirling, Scotland. Transformations Community/Earth System Governance Conference 2025 (abstracts/session plans)
The 2025 TC/ESG Conference will feature a programmatic focus on navigating sustainability transformations towards justice and equity. Achieving a fair and inclusive future where we live well within the limits of our planet requires societies to undergo transformations that will enhance the quality of life for both present and future generations, and across species. These sustainability transformations must address existing injustices, including those produced by systems of domination such as colonialism, while also ensuring that new inequities are not created in the process. This conference aims to bring together academics and practitioners that are navigating these complexities in their work to share their insights and build new transdisciplinary collaborations towards building sustainable and just futures. Stockholm University, Postdoctoral Fellow (Stockholm, Sweden)
The postdoctoral position will be part of the 4-year research project “Rising to the Challenge of the Climate Transition: EU’s Leadership in a Just and Effective Transformation towards Climate Neutrality amidst Turbulence, Crises, and Political Conflicts”, funded by the Swedish Research Council on Sustainable Development (FORMAS). We are seeking candidates with a PhD in Political Science or related disciplines with a background in EU’s climate, environmental – and energy policy and international climate politics. University of Colorado Boulder, Professor of Journalism & Director of the Center for Environmental Journalism (Boulder, USA)
The Department of Journalism in the College of Media, Communication and Information (CMCI) at the University of Colorado Boulder invites applications for a tenure-track open-rank professor of environmental journalism. The successful candidate will also be appointed as the Faculty Director of the college’s Center for Environmental Journalism (CEJ). The successful candidate will identify within the broad field of journalism but specialize in an area that could fit under a very broad definition of environmental or science journalism. Hubbell Environmental Law Initiative, Associate Director (Iowa City, USA)
The HELI’s Associate Director will work closely with the Faculty Director and the Program Director. This is a 75% regular benefitted Professional and Scientific appointment intended to assist with programming, and 25% Instructional faculty position, making this a full-time position. You will work with the HELI Program Director to organize and implement HELI programs, including workshops, conferences and webinars. This includes conducting research related to current topics of interest, reaching out to individuals with expertise on these topics, and moderating some events, teach two courses per academic year in the field of environmental, energy, and natural resources law (courses to be determined in consultation with the HELI Faculty Director and the Associate Dean for Academic Affairs), and more. Child/Youth-friendly Climate Justice: Progress and Opportunities (online and in-person, Cork, Ireland)
Children and youth have had leadership roles in efforts to combat the climate crisis, challenging traditional attitudes to children as passive victims. Children have been heard by national governments, parliaments and others in power. The UN Committee on the Rights of the Child has produced a General Comment on the right of children to a healthy environment, with the involvement of thousands of children all over the world. Much of the recent climate litigation involves children/youth as litigants or children’s rights arguments, in another groundbreaking turn for children’s rights. There is much to research in the area. There is also much to be done to bring together practitioners/advocates with academics who analyse these occurrences through the framework of the UN Convention on the Rights of the Child. Questions must also be asked about the extent to which climate/environmental justice systems are sufficiently accessible and appropriate for children and youth. This international, interdisciplinary conference fills this gap, hosting papers and discussions on this topic from children/youth, academics, practitioners and others. Date: September 30 – October 1, 2024. Remedy for Climate-Induced Human Rights Harm (online and in-person, Geneva)
This side event to the 57th session of the Human Rights Council (HRC57), organized by the Center for International Environmental Law and the Geneva Climate Change Consultation Group (GeCCco), with the support of the Office of the High Commissioner for Human Rights, aims to advance discourse and action on the human rights to access justice and effective remedy in the context of climate-induced human rights violations, and the role of national, regional, and UN human rights institutions in advancing them. Climate Litigation and Vulnerabilities: Global South Perspectives Book Launch (online and in-person, Southampton, England)
This public manuscript launch is aimed at celebrating and drawing attention to new, innovative scholarship on climate litigation and vulnerabilities as part of the GNHRE Climate Litigation in the Global South Project. Authors will briefly present on their chapters to share the highlights of their contributions to the manuscript, Climate Litigation and Vulnerabilities: Global South Perspectives (edited by Maria Antonia Tigre, Melanie Murcott and Susan Ann Samuel, to be published by Routledge in 2025) for the first time in the public domain.
