Abstract

Considers the difficulties faced by developers of the new generation of nuclear power plants in clearing the Government’s regulatory generic design assessment by the planned date of June 2011. Discusses the progress towards clearance by the two designs of the European pressurised water nuclear reactor and the Westinghouse AP-1000. Highlights the outstanding issue of how to deal with higher-level nuclear waste.
